The standard Arabic keyboard layout

The keyboard follows the standard Arabic (101) layout used by Windows, macOS and printed keyboards across Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Arabic-speaking countries. Learning it here means you can type on any Arabic keyboard. The table shows which English key produces each letter.

Useful key combinations

Right-to-left and mixed text

Arabic is written from right to left, while numbers and English words inside an Arabic sentence still run left to right. Choose RTL for Arabic text, LTR for mostly-English text, or Auto to let every line take the direction of its first letter — useful for bilingual messages. The direction only changes how the text is displayed; the copied text is always the same.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Arabic without an Arabic keyboard?

Open this page and tap the letters on the virtual keyboard, or type on your normal keyboard — each key produces the Arabic letter printed at that position on a standard Arabic keyboard. Then press Copy text and paste wherever you need it.

How do I add vowel marks (tashkeel)?

Press Shift on the virtual keyboard (or hold Shift on your own keyboard). The top letter rows switch to fatha, damma, kasra, sukun, tanween and the other marks. Type the letter first, then the mark.

Can I mix Arabic and English?

Yes. Untick “Physical keys type Arabic” to type English with your keyboard, and use the virtual keyboard for Arabic. Choose Auto direction so each line is aligned by the language it starts with.

Why does backspace remove only the vowel mark?

Vowel marks are separate characters in Unicode. Backspace removes one character at a time, so you can fix a mark without retyping the letter — the same as on a native Arabic keyboard.

How do I type Arabic numbers like ١٢٣?

Press the 123 key at the bottom left of the keyboard to switch the number row to Arabic-Indic digits. To convert numbers in existing text, use the Arabic Numbers converter.

Is the text I type stored anywhere?

No. Typing, editing and copying all happen in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server.
